In my Pop Music & Society lecture today it was all about heavy metal and excess in music which involved my lecturer using studies from the early 90s to state that metal is 100% a misogynistic and violent genre of music, that is also incredibly simple, and used the video for Satyricon’s Fuel for Hatred to show this (because of how controversial it was when it came out). She admitted that it was a rather extreme example, but still said that the genre was like she stated. Also she was like “nah, you ain’t gonna find songs about love and romance here”.
Now, I am far from a metal elitist and I couldn’t care less about genres and such, but goddamn, they need to update the studies they are using because shit has changed a hell of a lot. Yeah metal is still stupid as fuck most of the time and is still dominated by the straight white male but there is an increasing amount of music that goes against this suggested attitude that is being released and it is not being noticed at all (I mean, Volition was essentially a social justice record haha and I have heard a buttload of “romantic” metal songs recently).
Also Satyricon are the worst band to show as an example of heavy metal lol
